Sussex Bird Reports 1-14 (1948-61)
Pre-Sussex Ornithological Society
In 1948 Graham des Forges presented the first Sussex Bird Report separate from other counties which had comprised the South-Eastern Bird Report since 1934. Although modest by the 21st century standards these were a remarkable, privately funded project. In 1949 Denzil D Harber became joint editor and in 1956 became the sole editor. It appears most were printed by Charles Clark (Haywards Heath). Initially the systematic order, in which the records were presented, was that used by “The Handbook of British Birds” and very different from later orders. From 1954 the order shown was that in the British Ornithologist’s Union (BOU), similar to the more familiar Wetmore order. All these are scanned images, some from old photocopies so are not of high quality and not always aligned perfectly. Rotating the images clockwise will enable easier reading.
