I hope that you were excited at seeing a Honey-buzzard chick in the live-streamed nest. The chick hatched on 23 June in the morning and has since been fed with wasp larvae and pieces of frog.
There is a second egg which may hatch though it could be infertile. *UPDATE ; 2ND CHICK NOW HATCHED* 🐣🐣
Any fledged young will leave the nest in early August, though may not leave Britain until September or even October, to spend 18 months in West Africa. The main risks are probably Goshawk predation and prolonged severe weather events, though there are other hazards.
The Society has part-funded and advised on the filming, which is the subject of research projects by University of Sussex students, the results of which will be published in the 2026 Sussex Bird Report and likely elsewhere.
Thanks to project partners: the Conservators of Ashdown Forest and Wildlife Windows Ltd, as well as to the other funders. The project and the Society has received national attention via SpringWatch, ITV Meridian, BBC SE News and BirdGuides, which we hope will attract new members.
